• Hey, let’s go swimming!
• oh ah I can’t swim! I’m scared of water!

It is a very common conversation between a Vietnamese and a foreigner. Why can’t a lot of young Vietnamese people swim? There are 3 main reasons for this:

• Vietnamese parents are overprotective. Instead of teaching their children how to face dangers, they often teach them how to avoid or stay away from risks.
• Schools focus on academic programs as the most essential part. Many students only prioritize high scores, academic degrees or certificates
• There are not enough swimming courses or sport traning programs provided to students, especially to those living far away from big cities. Even now the government focuses more on extracurricular activites at schools, many students are not so interested in them given the two reasons above.

Đó là một cuộc trò chuyện rất phổ biến giữa người Việt Nam và người nước ngoài. Tại sao nhiều bạn trẻ Việt Nam không biết bơi? Có 3 lý do chính cho điều này: 

• Cha mẹ Việt Nam bao bọc quá mức. Thay vì dạy con cách đối diện với nguy hiểm, họ thường dạy con cách tránh xa nó.
• Các trường học tập trung nhiều vào chương trình học thuật như một phần thiết yếu nhất. Nhiều học sinh chỉ ưu tiên bằng cấp hoặc chứng chỉ có điểm số cao.
• Không có đủ các khóa học bơi hoặc các chương trình huấn luyện thể thao cho học sinh, đặc biệt là những bạn sống xa các thành phố lớn. Ngay cả khi chính phủ chú trọng nhiều hơn đến các hoạt động ngoại khóa tại các trường học, nhiều học sinh không mấy mặn mà với chúng vì hai lý do trên.
